What if you call Leonardo da Vinci to design your new product?
Here is a guess. He would ask for a brief and then approach the brief from various angles. As he used to do with his paintings.
Leonardo used to study and draw his subject from at least 3 different perspectives.
That was his secret of getting real understanding of the subject at hand.
Obviously his paintings evoke a great sense of completeness and integrity.
This is also a great mind set to approach any problem or opportunity
[How can we use this?]
When there is a problem at hand, don't jump on a solution. Look to the problem from a distance with some aloofness and see it from different point of views.
For example let us suppose you are planning to design a chair.
Step 1:
Choose 3 people :
Say a very tall man
A very fat woman
An infant
Step 2:
Write down how they are going to use your chair.
Step 3:
What possible features will they ask for to make the chair most useful to them?
Step 4:
Write down all the ideas triggered by this exercise and use them in your design.
[Don’t forget to thank Leonardo for these insights!]
